The functions of librarianship include not only acquiring and organizing materials, but perhaps more importantly, providing easy access to these resources. It seems that a strong working knowledge of cataloging will equip school librarians with tools necessary to more effectively and efficiently make these resources readily accessible – especially as the variety of resources and materials continues to expand and evolve at an ever increasing pace. Additionally, I would think that a strong working knowledge of cataloging – a kind of shared vocabulary – would make collaboration between libraries and librarians easier.
