In 5208, Learning Resources Organization (Cataloging), we were recently asked: Some public libraries have abandoned DDC in favor of BISAC (Book Industry Standards and Communications, the classification system used at most bookstores). If you were setting up a library, which would you use?
I think it might depend on my community. In an elementary school setting, it seems that a combination of both might be the best fit. In most cases, nonfiction works well with DDC for young children, with some exceptions for things like biographies and traditional literature. My students appreciate having fiction outside of the DDC system. I think that they would also appreciate further grouping areas of interest like mystery, fantasy and graphic novels.
